Enabler for Improving Rural Production Systems
Rural Production System (RPS) comprises factors of production - biophysical resources (soil, water,
topography etc.); skills, risk bearing capacity of human resource and stock of capital supporting the
primary economic sector. It’s a comprehensive way to intervene in rural economy especially in low
equilibrium, high migration economies. To support local economy to move from state of low equilibrium
to higher growth and create place based employment it is necessary to augment the basic carrying
capacity, production potential and local processing.
Partnership with SELCO Foundation a “Green Rural Economic Zone” is being created in Ramgarh,
Jharkhand. Another option in this space is solar-powered community managed irrigation systems. TRIF
has worked closely with the Syngenta Foundation India and the State Government of Jharkhand to create
large demonstration of community managed solar power irrigation system to rapidly accelerate
agriculture production, especially Hi-Value agriculture in an area. TRIF has developed a customized
tech-application for rapid ground survey for quick technical designing of the schemes on the ground. On
implementation of the hardware it is handed over to a village committee after building capacities of
maintenance and systems for recovery of operating-costs. The program is highly successful and leads to
immediate doubling of farm-incomes.
A similar model with a smaller-pumping device owned by an individual entrepreneur for selling
water-pumping as a service has been piloted by TRIF. This too has huge potential in transforming the
agriculture production – especially for small-holder farming families.
Extensive work during the year on expansion of solar micro-grids and solar powered community managed
irrigation program was done. Intent is to bring and showcase technologies around – Solar water pumping
solutions, solar post-harvesting technologies, Solar min-cold storage, soil testing, etc. on the Farm
production system. The engagement is complementary and is being implemented closely with ongoing
work in these geography. The solution space being curated as 3 pegs (a) Demonstration of RE businesses
set up with local Krish Vigyan Kendras and Federations under National Rural Livelihoods Mission –
creating model for individuals to adopt it in their context (b) promote local youth (educated unemployed)
to take up RE business as enterprise (c) create ecosystem of supply, service and finance for many more
youth to adopt this model in their contexts.

embedded with existing social mobilisation of households in groups the model with
support, ecosystem, demonstration and enterprises creates drivers and space for
sustained large-scale replication beyond project period and is not dependent of Project Intervention
